I just intended to spend the morning at the track, checking out the morning workouts and maybe finding an exercise rider to come help me get the two-year-okds started under saddle. Instead, I ended up bringing another horse home.

    Cut for photo )

Say hello to "Hand Grenade," a three-year-old who (a) needs a barn name that is easier to say than Hand Grenade and (b) was sold off for next to nothing because he's a "lost cause." Now, to be fair, he DID try to kill me when I loaded him into the trailer. And when I got him out of the trailer. And when we were walking to the pasture. And I haven't actually been able to catch him yet so I can bring him in to his stall for the night. I was also warned that he's a kicker, a biter, hates the starting gate, throws his riders, and doesn't like being around other horses.

Still... with his bloodlines, he's got potential. Maybe he just needs someone who speaks his language. There's a chance he's "incorrigible" and "untrainable" like his old owner said... and there's a chance that he just needs a change of scenery. I guess we'll find out soon enough. I always did like a challenge.

I was going to hit up the Horsemen for a couple of beers last night, but as I approached town, I heard the sounds of rioting and saw flames on the horizon... I had a flashback to the year I was in Dallas when the Cowboys lost the Super Bowl at home due to a really shitty incomplete pass. There were definitely cop cars on fire that night.

Anyway, since I don't have any desire to end up in jail again, I decided to just head back home and hope no drunken looters tried to steal one of my horses. Not that they'd get far riding horses no one has ever even put a saddle on.

Actually, that might be funny to watch. I wish someone would have tried it.

Oh, and just so you guys know, apparently the Great Foxplain Riot made the daily newspapers in the states, too. My dear grandmother sent me a howler scolding me since obviously anytime anyone gets in a fight within 50 miles of my current residence, it's gotta be my fault.

Today, Nox decided to let me know that even though I thought he was ready to do some groundwork in the round pen, that he most certainly did not agree with me. His hooves are larger than I remember. My knee is twice its normal size right now. It's also much more... purple than it should be.

Oh well. That's why I have beer and frozen peas. They taste terrible, but make an excellent ice pack. The beer is just for drinking.

Anyone want to explain why there is a pillow fort by the bar at Waldo's? I was going to stop in for a drink, but everyone in the joint looks a little concerned about the person sitting underneath sheets that are draped over barstools.

Please enlighten me. Am I missing out on some kind of political protest?

Oh... someone is approaching the fort. Ha! A very drunk guy just kicked the sheets and asked the fort-dweller "why the fuck are you hiding out under sheets at the fucking bar, you fucking moron?" And the sheet moron yelled at him in German---

No, it's a sheet Moran! Well, that explains everything, doesn't it?

Now I've gotta find out why Noah has built himself a tent under the bar.

As of about 3 o'clock this morning, the population of my little farm grew by one. My mare, Lola, gave birth to her first foal, a perfectly healthy colt, about a week sooner than the vet predicted. Mom and baby are doing great and resting, and I think I'm going to sit back, enjoy a celebratory beer, and start brainstorming names.

Of course, I couldn't allude to something as cute as a baby animal without providing a photo. It's a little dark because I didn't want to use flash and scare the little guy or upset his mother. Feel free to say "aww." You know you want to.

I couldn't even find a place to sit at the bar tonight, so I assume classes are about to start back up? It was nice and quiet around here for awhile. Good luck to y'all academic types. Glad I'm not the one who will be spending 15 hours a week in a classroom.

If any students (or anyone, really) needs extra cash and isn't afraid of a little manual labor, I could use a hand reinforcing the hayloft in my barn over the next couple of weeks. I'm not expecting any expert carpenters, but if you don't know how to use a hammer, please don't volunteer your services. I'm not much of a teacher. We can negotiate an hourly wage.
